You Can Be a Man: Introduction

Being a man is about more than simply possessing the expected swimsuit-area equipment. Living life as a man is the result of a long list of choices. Yes, you can be male and still not be a man. There are plenty of guys, blokes, dudes, bros, homeboys, fellas, gentlemen, and boys out there. A man stands apart from all of that. There are some defining characteristics, influenced by deliberate choices, that set men above their gender peers.

In this blog I will attempt to identify the attributes of a man and compare them to those that fall into the other male categories. If you find yourself lacking, many of these things are quick fixes; others take years to cultivate. Don't be discouraged! All of us started as boys.

There are a few things I should clarify before we start. This guide is directed at heterosexual men. I'm a straight guy, so my perspective will obviously influence some of my opinions. However, I believe that many of the truths about being a man are universal. Hopefully, most of this blog will be applicable to all males.

To be a man, you don't need a lot of money... but it helps. Some of the things I'll cover in this blog could be classified as extravagance if you're working on a tight budget. Some could be seen as too expensive to be practical. First, practicality and manliness don't always walk hand-in-hand. More importantly, most people can afford more than they think they can. Travel, for example, is one area of common misconception when it comes to cost. Many people believe that globe-trotting is an activity limited to the very rich, or the self-employed. Not true. Many people assume that traveling abroad is more expensive than taking a holiday domestically. Again, not true in many cases.

While having a cash reserve will allow you to do more as a man, it isn't the most essential factor in building yourself into the man that you want to be. If you're fortunate enough to have a disposable income, we'll find plenty of exciting ways for you to dispense with it.
